Scones Too Dry
Your scones are crumbly and dry from overbaking or too much flour. Add moisture and serve warm to soften them.

dry texture crumbly bite vegetarian
Ingredients on hand
- dry scones
- cream or milk
- butter
- jam
- oven
Why it happened
Scones lose moisture quickly once overbaked. A short steam in foil rehydrates the crumb without making the exterior soggy.
The fix
- 1 brush the tops with 2 tablespoons warm cream or milk
- 2 wrap in foil and warm at 300F for 5 minutes to steam-soften
- 3 serve with butter and jam to add moisture
If it's still wrong
- Split and toast for a crisp texture, then top like a shortcake.
- Cube and bake for 8 minutes to make scone croutons.
Prevent next time
- Mix gently and stop when the dough just comes together.
- Pull scones when the tops are lightly golden, not deep brown.
Notes
Why this works
Foil traps steam from the added cream, which softens the crumb. The extra fat from butter fills the dry pockets, making each bite feel richer and less dusty.
Substitutions
- cream → milk
- jam → honey
- butter → clotted cream
