Rice Too Salty
Your rice tastes overly salty because the cooking water was over-seasoned. Dilute and balance the flavor.
too salty harsh finish vegetarian gluten-free
Ingredients on hand
- cooked rice
- unsalted water
- butter
- lemon juice
- herbs
Why it happened
Salt cannot be removed, only diluted. Fat and acid change how the salt is perceived, making the rice taste less harsh.
The fix
- 1 mix in an equal amount of unsalted cooked rice if available
- 2 stir in 1 tablespoon butter to soften the salt perception
- 3 finish with lemon juice and herbs
If it's still wrong
- serve with plain proteins or vegetables to dilute each bite
- use the rice in a soup where salt spreads out
Prevent next time
- use 1/2 teaspoon salt per cup of rice as a baseline
- taste the cooking liquid before simmering
Notes
Why this works
Rice absorbs all the salt in its cooking liquid. Adding unsalted rice or balancing with fat and acid lowers the perceived saltiness without changing texture.
