Ingredients on hand
- baked cupcakes
- serrated knife
- milk
- frosting
- sprinkles
Why it happened
High heat sets the edges quickly and pushes the center up. Removing the dome and adding moisture creates an even, tender surface.
The fix
- 1 level the domes with a serrated knife
- 2 brush the cut tops with 1 teaspoon milk each
- 3 frost and decorate to hide the seams
If it's still wrong
- make cake pops from the trimmed tops
- serve as shortcake cups with berries
Prevent next time
- bake 25F lower and check early
- mix just until the batter is smooth
Notes
Why this works
Doming is caused by rapid edge setting and a still-rising center. Leveling the tops and adding a touch of moisture evens out the texture and makes the cupcake feel intentional.
