Ingredients on hand
- cooked couscous
- hot water or stock
- olive oil
- butter
- herbs
Why it happened
Couscous is tiny pasta that needs even hydration. A short steam loosens the grains and makes them tender.
The fix
- 1 sprinkle 2 tablespoons hot water or stock over the couscous
- 2 cover and steam 2 minutes
- 3 toss with olive oil or butter and herbs
If it's still wrong
- mix into a salad with a wet dressing
- serve under a saucy stew
Prevent next time
- pour boiling liquid evenly and cover immediately
- fluff right after steaming
Notes
Why this works
Dry couscous simply lacks hydration. Steam adds moisture evenly without turning the grains to mush, and fat adds a softer mouthfeel.
