Bread Loaf Collapsed
Your loaf sank after baking because it was underbaked or overproofed. Turn it into slices and toast to recover texture.
Part of baking cooking fixes .
sunken loaf dense center vegetarian
Ingredients on hand
- collapsed loaf
- oven
- butter
- knife
- olive oil
Why it happened
If the center never fully sets, it collapses as it cools. Toasting dries and firms the crumb so it feels intentional.
The fix
- 1 slice the loaf and toast at 325F for 8 minutes
- 2 brush with butter or olive oil for moisture
- 3 serve as toast, crostini, or croutons
If it's still wrong
- turn into bread pudding
- pulse into breadcrumbs
Prevent next time
- bake to an internal temperature of 200F
- avoid overproofing by watching the rise
Notes
Why this works
Collapsed loaves are usually under-set. Dry heat finishes the structure and creates a better chew, even if the original rise is lost.
Substitutions
- butter → olive oil
